How to Prepare Your Files for Printing (Without the Headache)

Published on 28 August 2025 at 18:18

Ready to turn your photos or artwork into beautiful prints? Awesome!

But before you hit “send,” let’s talk about one of the most common questions we get at French Broad Imaging:

“How do I make sure my file is actually ready to print?”

Don’t worry—it’s not as scary as it sounds. We’re here to walk you through it step by step.

Start with the Best Quality You Have

Prints can only be as good as the files you give us.

  • High-resolution images (generally 300 DPI at final size) work best.

  • Avoid screenshots or tiny web images—they’ll look pixelated when enlarged.

  • If you’re not sure your file is big enough, just ask! We’ll check it for you.

Color Mode Matters

For printing, we usually recommend sRGB or Adobe RGB color profiles.

  • sRGB is safe for most photos.

  • Adobe RGB can give extra range for pro photographers and artists.

If you’re not sure what your file is in, don’t sweat it—we can help convert it.

Watch Your Cropping

Think about how you want your image framed or printed.

  • Is anything important too close to the edge?

  • Are you okay with a border or full bleed?

We’ll review your crop with you, but it helps to think about it in advance.

File Formats We Love

We accept a lot of file types, but some are better than others.

TIFF: Great for highest quality, no compression.
JPEG: Fine as long as it’s high-resolution.
PDF: Good for graphic designs and text.
PSD: Keeps layers if you want editing help.

If you’re confused about formats, don’t worry. Send what you have—we’ll guide you.

Don’t Forget to Talk to Us!

This is the big one.

You don’t have to figure it all out alone.

  • Tell us what you want to do with the print.

  • Let us know where it’s going or how it’ll be displayed.

  • Ask us questions!

We love helping customers get it right. Our goal isn’t just to hit “print”—it’s to make sure you’re thrilled with what you get.
