Restoring Old Family Photos: What You Can Do First (Before Sending to Us)

Published on 4 November 2025 at 11:19

Before sending your cherished family photos for restoration, here’s how to safely handle, scan, and protect them.

Old family photos carry irreplaceable memories — and often a few creases, stains, or fading. Before you bring them to us, a little care can make restoration easier and safer.

**RESTORATION is one of our FAVORITE things to do!**

Step 1: Handle with Clean, Dry Hands

Natural oils and moisture cause further damage. Cotton gloves are even better.

Step 2: Don’t Try to “Fix” with Tape or Glue

Even acid-free tape can stain over time. Let us handle physical repairs digitally.

Step 3: Store Flat and Away from Light

Avoid rolling, folding, or stacking photos. Light and heat accelerate fading.

Step 4: Scan If Possible

If you have a home scanner, send us the digital copy — it helps us begin restoration without risking the original.

Step 5: Bring Everything, Even Damaged Pieces

We can often rebuild torn or missing sections from partial fragments.
